How to Install Mods in Slay the Spire 2: Steam Workshop, Manual Mods, and Saves
A complete step-by-step guide to installing mods in Slay the Spire 2. Learn Steam Workshop subscriptions, manual Nexus installs, v0.108.0 save-copy behavior, and common troubleshooting.
Before You Start
Slay the Spire 2 now supports community mods through two practical paths: Steam Workshop subscriptions for most players, and manual file-based installs for Nexus releases, local builds, or mods that have not moved to Workshop yet.
Important: modded runs still use a separate save path from unmodded runs. As of beta v0.108.0, the first modded launch copies your unmodded saves into the modded save directory automatically and explains the copy with a popup. Older builds may still require the manual save step below.
Step 1: Find Your Game Folder
The installation location depends on your platform:
Steam (Windows): Right-click Slay the Spire 2 in your Steam Library → Manage → Browse local files. This opens the game root folder.
Steam (Mac): Right-click the game in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Browse. Navigate to SlayTheSpire2.app/Contents/MacOS/.
Standalone / Other: Navigate to wherever you installed the game. Look for the folder containing SlayTheSpire2.exe (Windows) or SlayTheSpire2.app (Mac).
- Windows Steam path: SteamsteamappscommonSlay the Spire 2
- Mac Steam path: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Slay the Spire 2/SlayTheSpire2.app/Contents/MacOS/
- Make sure you are in the folder with the game executable, not just the app bundle.
Step 2: Create the Mods Folder
Inside your game folder (the same directory as the executable), create a new folder named exactly mods (all lowercase). This is where all mod files will live.
The folder structure should look like this:
- Slay the Spire 2/
- SlayTheSpire2.exe (or .app)
- mods/ ← create this folder
Step 3: Install from Steam Workshop or Nexus Mods
If the mod is on Steam Workshop, subscribe there first. Steam will download the files, keep them updated, and let the official launcher load them. Use Nexus Mods or manual files when the mod author has not published a Workshop version.
Manual mods usually ship as a folder or archive containing code, manifest/config files, and sometimes assets or localization files. Extract the package and place the folder exactly where the author instructs, usually inside mods/.
Do not flatten a mod package unless the author explicitly says to. Many current STS2 mods expect their folder structure to stay intact.
- Prefer Steam Workshop where available.
- Manual mods usually go in mods/ as a complete folder.
- Keep the author-provided folder structure.
Step 4: Launch in Modded Mode
When you launch Slay the Spire 2, the game will detect your mods/ folder and prompt you to choose between Modded and Unmodded mode. Select Play Modded to load your installed mods.
If this is your first time launching with mods on beta v0.108.0 or newer, the game should copy your unmodded saves into the separate modded save directory automatically. Your original unmodded saves remain untouched.
- Launch the game normally through Steam or your shortcut
- Choose Play Modded when prompted
- If no prompt appears, check that your mods/ folder is in the correct location
Step 5: Check Your Save Files (Usually Automatic)
On beta v0.108.0 and newer, the first modded launch should copy your unmodded saves automatically. Use this manual check only if your progress does not appear in modded mode, or if you are on an older main/beta build.
- Windows unmodded saves: %APPDATA%\Roaming\SlayTheSpire2\steam\[SteamID]\profile1\saves\
- Windows modded saves: %APPDATA%\Roaming\SlayTheSpire2\steam\[SteamID]\modded\profile1\saves\
- Mac unmodded saves: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/[SteamID]/[GameID]/remote/
- Mac modded saves: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/[SteamID]/[GameID]/modded/
- Copy manually only if the automatic v0.108.0 migration did not run or your progress is missing
Troubleshooting
If your mods are not working, check these common issues:
- Mods not showing up: Make sure the mods/ folder is in the same directory as the game executable, not inside any subfolder.
- Game crashes on launch: Remove mods one by one to identify which mod is causing the crash. Some mods may be outdated or incompatible with the current game version.
- Save files not carrying over: On beta v0.108.0 or newer, restart once and check for the migration popup. On older builds, manually copy your saves as described in Step 5.
- Mod not working as expected: Check the Workshop or Nexus page for specific installation instructions. Some mods may require dependencies or specific folder structures.
- Cannot find game folder on Mac: Right-click SlayTheSpire2.app → Show Package Contents → Contents → MacOS.
Uninstalling Mods
To remove a mod, simply delete its files from the mods/ folder. Most mods only consist of a .dll and .json file with the same name. Delete both files to fully remove the mod.
To completely disable all mods, you can either delete everything in the mods/ folder or launch the game in Unmodded mode.
- Delete ModName.dll and ModName.json to remove a single mod
- Delete all files in mods/ to remove every mod
- Launch in Unmodded mode to play without mods without deleting files
