SlayThePlayer

A 2-player PvP Versus mod for Slay the Spire 2. Build your deck on your own route through the Spire, then fight your opponent at each act boss. Best of 3 acts wins.

Both players should use the same mod version. Support targets stable Slay the Spire 2 updates. Beta branches and cross-mod compatibility are not guaranteed or part of the supported scope.

All artwork for this mod was commissioned. No AI art was used.

New in 1.4.0
- A game-styled PvP settings menu with persistent host-controlled rules, optional turn timers, customizable balance changes, and Fate Thread curse choices.
- Battle replays with both players' cards and energy, playback controls, and a PvP History shortcut.
- Browse the map while waiting at the boss, plus animated victory and defeat messages.

How It Works
1. Open the multiplayer menu and choose Versus.
2. Host or join a lobby. The host can configure the rules through PvP settings before starting.
3. Each player starts an independent singleplayer run, with the connection kept alive for Versus. You choose your own route without shared traversal or voting.
4. At the act boss, fight the other player instead. If you arrive first, you can browse the map while the game's animated waiting indicator stays on screen. Combat begins when both players are ready.
5. Win 2 acts to win the series. If the series is decided after act 2, the winner can finish immediately or continue into act 3 with normal bosses. An opponent abandoning also offers an early finish.

Both players use the same PvE seed by default. The host can enable different seeds for separate maps. Opponent map markers are hidden when different seeds are enabled.

Versus is a separate mode. Its gameplay changes are scoped to Versus runs.

PvP Settings
The lobby owner controls the rules. Guests can browse a dimmed, read-only settings menu. Applied settings persist between matches and game restarts, and Reset all to defaults is available at the top.

PvP
- First to play: Random by default, or let the first player to reach the boss go first.
- Different seed from other player: Off by default.
- Turn timer: Infinite by default. Set a time limit to add a countdown during both players' turns and automatically end turns when time runs out.
- Health scaling: Customize or disable scaling by act. Defaults are 1x, 2x, and 3x current and maximum HP for acts 1, 2, and 3 during PvP.
- Second-player starting damage: Customize or disable the opening damage intention for the player going second. Defaults are 10, 20, and 30 damage by act.

Balance Changes
- Doom: Capped at 50% of scaled maximum HP by default. Change the percentage or disable the cap.
- Beating Remnant: Its per-turn HP loss limit becomes 35% of maximum HP by default. Change the percentage or disable the change to use the normal 20 HP limit.

Fate Thread
- Enable or disable revival, and choose the percentage of HP restored. Default: enabled, 20% HP.
- Enable or disable the curse penalty. Default: enabled.
- Choose a curse from a dropdown, or select Random for a random curse each time. Default: Clumsy.

PvP Combat
Players alternate turns. Damage aimed at the opponent is queued as a visible intention instead of immediately hitting them. The defender gets a full turn to react and build block before that incoming damage resolves.

- Intentions show a total and a breakdown of individual hits.
- Relevant damage modifiers update the intentions. Hits that bypass Weak use blue text in the breakdown.
- Normal attack hits can trigger retaliation effects such as Thorns and Flame Barrier. Unpowered hits, such as orb damage, do not trigger those effects.
- Enemy-directed HP loss effects such as Poison and Haunt are converted into blockable queued damage that bypasses Weak.
- HP, block, powers, Defect orbs, and Osty are synchronized so you can follow your opponent's state.
- Styled You Won! and You Lost! messages mark the battle result.

Battle Replays
Want to rewatch a close match or see what your opponent had in hand?

Open PvP History from the multiplayer menu or Versus lobby to see only runs containing PvP battles. You can also use Compendium > Run History. Hover a boss portrait with a pulsing gold glow and look for Click to watch PvP replay beneath the floor number, then click the portrait.

- Watch either player's turn with their hand, played cards, and character energy display. A glow identifies the active character.
- Pause playback or choose 0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 4x speed.
- The replay toolbar fades after your mouse has been away from it for 3 seconds. Hover over it to bring it back.
- Browsing PvP History from a lobby keeps the lobby alive. Back returns you to where you came from.
- Replays store compact action data locally, and keep the latest 500 battles. Older replay files are removed without deleting run history.
- Battles without saved replay data cannot be reconstructed retroactively.

Custom Relics
Both players receive these relics at the start of a Versus run. Both feature commissioned artwork.

Fate Thread
"Fate spares you once more, slowly you weave your own snare."

A safety net outside PvP. With default settings, it revives you at 20% maximum HP, lets you escape a fight without rewards, and adds a Clumsy curse to your deck. It can trigger repeatedly, with a curse penalty each time. Temporary block protects against remaining blockable hits while the escape resolves.

The host can change the revival amount, choose or randomize the curse, disable the curse penalty, or disable Fate Thread entirely.

Grin & Grave
"One smiles. One waits."

Your first defeat in PvP ends the battle and revives you at 1 HP so you can continue the series. Your opponent wins that act. The relic turns gray and cannot revive you again during that run. It has no effect outside PvP.

Other UI Features
- Versus button in the multiplayer menu.
- Unlock All button in the Versus lobby character selection.
- Custom boss map icons and opponent portraits in run history.
- Opponent portrait in the top bar, with character concealment for a Random pick before the first PvP encounter.
- Donate and Discord buttons in the Versus lobby.

Planned future work
- 4-player support.
- Further animation fixes and polish.
