How to Install Mods

Installation Guide

Updated for v0.108.0 beta save migration and Steam Workshop support (July 2026)

Prerequisites

Slay the Spire 2 on Steam

The game is currently Steam-exclusive on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Mods are not distributed on Epic or other stores.

Latest Early Access build

Keep your client up to date. v0.107.1 added official Steam Workshop support, and v0.108.0 beta adds automatic first-launch copying from vanilla saves into modded saves.

Basic file management

You'll need to navigate Steam's local files and, for manual installs, extract archives and move folders.

Method A — Steam Workshop (Recommended)

As of v0.107.1, Steam Workshop is the official mod entry point. Workshop mods are version-tracked, auto-updated, and loaded through the official launcher. This is the safest path when a Workshop version exists.

  1. 1

Open your Steam library, select Slay the Spire 2, and switch to the Workshop tab.

  2. 2

Browse available mods and click the green Subscribe button on each one you want.

  3. 3

Back in your library, click Play and choose 'Play with Mods'. Launching directly bypasses the mod loader.

  4. 4

Accept the 'untrusted code' warning on first launch, then fully restart the game so the loaders initialize correctly.

  5. 5

Open the Mods menu from the main screen, enable each mod, and restart once more.

Subscriptions sync via Steam Cloud, so Steam Deck and other machines pick up your loadout automatically.

Method B — Manual Install

For mods not on the Workshop (some Nexus Mods releases, dev builds), drop them into the game's mods folder.

Windows / Linux

Right-click the game in Steam → Manage → Browse local files, then create a 'mods' folder if it doesn't exist:

…\steamapps\common\Slay the Spire 2\mods\

macOS

Right-click SlayTheSpire2.app → Show Package Contents, then create a 'mods' folder inside MacOS/:

…/Slay the Spire 2/SlayTheSpire2.app/Contents/MacOS/mods/
Most manually installed mods depend on Baselib and ModConfig. Install those first — the Workshop versions work fine alongside manual mods.

Verify the installation

Launch via 'Play with Mods', open the Mods menu, and confirm each mod is listed and enabled. If a mod is missing, its manifest.json is probably malformed and it has silently failed to load.

Things you should know

Saves are separated

Modded and vanilla runs use different save folders. On v0.108.0 beta or newer, the first modded launch should copy vanilla saves automatically; older builds may still need a manual copy.

Achievements are disabled

Launching with any active Workshop mod turns off Steam achievement tracking. Use vanilla for completion runs.

Co-op needs identical mods

All four players must load the same mods in the same order. BetterSpire2 Lite is one of the few MP-safe options.

macOS quirks

Launch the game from Finder with Rosetta enabled. Starting via Steam bypasses the Rosetta setting and crashes on Mac when mods are active.

Uninstall a mod

  1. 1

    Close the game completely.

  2. 2

Workshop: unsubscribe from the mod's page. Manual: delete the mod's folder from the mods/ directory.

  3. 3

Delete any leftover config.json the mod wrote, to avoid stale state on next launch.

  4. 4

    Restart the game.

Important notes

Mods are made by third parties — use at your own risk. Always back up saves before trying experimental mods, and report bugs to the mod author, not Mega Crit.
