Defect Guide: Orbs, Focus Scaling, and Why Cycling Matters

Defect is one of the strongest characters in the current build, but only if you understand why orb quality and cycling speed matter more than stuffing the deck with every shiny Power.

Defect is really a resource conversion class

Good Defect play is about turning card plays into better orb states, then turning those orb states into passive damage, burst evoke turns, or overwhelming defense.

The strongest beginner advice from recent Defect guides is to stop thinking of orbs as background value. Your orb bar is the engine, and the rest of the deck exists to build, preserve, and cash it in.

Three pillars: orb quality, Focus, and cycling

Orbs are only scary when the deck can improve their quality, multiply their output with Focus, and revisit them often enough to matter. This is why Defect lists with a clean cycle frequently outperform slower piles packed with expensive powers.

Claw and Status packages can work, but most broad community coverage still treats orb-focused shells as the most reliable baseline.

  • Prioritize cards that either improve orb output or help you see them more often.
  • Do not overload the deck with setup if Act 1 still needs front-loaded damage.
  • Think about when you want to evoke, not just what you want to channel.

The biggest Defect mistake

Many players lose with Defect because they draft every card that says Power, Focus, or Claw without checking whether the deck can survive until the engine turns on. Defect is powerful, but his bad turns can be brutally bad.

If your early floors are shaky, draft stabilization first. Once your defense and cycle are functional, the scaling takes over naturally.
