Boss Mechanics ++ shifts more of the game’s difficulty away from elites, in favour of harder boss encounters. The goal is to let you take bigger risks during the run, build a stronger deck, without which you will definitely lose.
You should not be able to breeze through bosses just because you entered the room with enough HP. Bosses are now more about preparing the right deck for the fight, and ending the encounter before the pressure overwhelms you. ⏳💀
📜Notice: The in-game Mod Config contains the exact mechanical details for every change. To keep this page mostly spoiler-light, the descriptions below focus on high-level design goals rather than exact numbers. ✨
Every boss and elite can be individually toggled between the modded version and the vanilla version.
No game restart or run restart is required. Toggle the option, then restart the encounter.
👑 Boss Changes 👑
Doormaker has been restored as an Act 3 boss🚪✨
This uses the native Doormaker encounter from the v0.103 build.
No redesign, just giving my boy some justice after being unfairly removed for being 'too complex' 🥹
🧪 Test Subject
Complexity 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Test Subject is now an adaptive boss that studies how you play. 👁️
Phase 1 is intentionally weak and acts as a learning phase, giving the boss time to observe your deck.
In later phases, Test Subject reawakens with adaptations designed to soft-counter what your de
Test Subject Adaptations
Adaptation: Evasive Maneuvers
Gains 6 Slippery, or 8 Slippery on Ascension 9+.
Adaptation: Thick Hide
After enough hits in a player turn, Test Subject gains 1 Intangible.
Threshold: 5 hits, or 4 hits on Ascension 9+.
Triggers up to 4 times, or 5 times on Ascension 9+.
Adaptation: Enrage
At the start of its turn, gains 1 Strength.
Adaptation: Turtle Shell
Gains 13 Plating, or 15 Plating on Ascension 9+.
Skull Bash also applies 1 Frail, or 2 Frail on Ascension 9+.
Adaptation: Power Up
Adds 2 extra adaptations to each phase.
This results in 4 adaptations in Phase 2 and 5 adaptations in Phase 3.
Adaptation: Constriction
Every 5th card played each player turn adds 1 Dazed to the discard pile.
On Ascension 9+, this triggers every 4th card.
Adaptation: Stoic
Gains 1 Artifact whenever Test Subject starts its turn with 0 Artifact.
📚 Knowledge Demon
Complexity 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Knowledge Demon no longer has the ability for Strength scaling. Instead, the fight is now a race against mental collapse. 🧠🕯️
Each Curse of Knowledge forces you deeper into escalating choices, burdens, and status effects.
If you take too long, knowledge becomes less like power and more like a prison. 🔒📖
Get out before the burden of knowledge overwhelms your sanity. 👁️💀
Disintegration is a core part of the fight: once it is applied, it deals damage at the end of your turn, and that damage increases by 1 every turn. This puts the entire encounter on a real timer. You can no longer sit back forever and outscale the Demon. The longer the fight goes, the more your own knowledge starts killing you.
Each Curse of Knowledge narrows your choices:
1st Curse: Choose 1 out of 5 debuffs
2nd Curse: Choose 1 out of 4 debuffs
3rd Curse: Choose 1 out of 3 debuffs
4th Curse: Choose 1 out of 2 debuffs
5th Curse: Choose 1 out of 1: Final Revelation
By the final curse, there is no more choice left. Final Revelation transforms your current combat cards into Status cards, leaving you almost entirely dependent on relics, potions, and whatever damage you can still force through before the Demon’s knowledge finishes you.
🕳️ The Insatiable
Complexity 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Sandpit is reworked to no longer be just a passive static countdown for turns. It is now an active tug-of-war between player and boss🪤
Your attacks can push The Insatiable away, buying space. But the Boss' attacks drag you closer in return.
The fight now asks you to constantly balance blocking, attacking, and using Frantic Escapes as necessary last resorts before the Sandpit overtakes you. ⚔️🏃
💣 Waterfall Giant
Complexity 2 ⭐⭐
Waterfall Giant’s explosion is now much more threatening, but also much more interactive. 🌋
Instead of being a pure HP check or block-draw gamble, the boss now gives you more warning and lets your attacks disperse steam pressure before the blast.
This means that attack damage directly reduces the final bomb damage, making the end of the fight a preparation window instead of a draw order check. ⚔️💨
🔔 Ceremonial Beast
Complexity 2 ⭐⭐
Ringing is now a core part of the fight instead of a one-time gimmick. 🔔
Ceremonial Beast can be stunned more often at certain HP thresholds, but Phase 2 will include Battle Cry as part of the Boss's rotation, regularly inflicting Ringing.
Ringing is less brutal than before, allowing 2 cards played instead of 1, but it makes the following attack a bigger threat more often.⚖️
🌀 Vantom
Complexity 2 ⭐⭐
Vantom’s Slippery mechanic is now a recurring buff . 👻
Each buff cycle from the boss refreshes a diminishing amount of Slippery stacks, forcing you to whittle them down quickly to do any real damage before the next set of slippery stacks.
In exchange, some of Vantom's raw damage and wound pressure has been toned down so the fight is less about being instantly punished and more about managing multiple slippery phases and surviving through them. ⚔️🌀
🕯️ Kin Priest
Complexity 2 ⭐⭐
Kin Priest now fully accepts his role as a support leader for his followers 🙏
Rather than simply being a boss with followers, the fight emphasizes bursting down the leader or the followers before being overwhelmed.
The Priest heals followers, pressures you with debuffs, and can bring followers back when at low health. ✨
👑 Queen
Complexity 3 ⭐⭐⭐
Queen now more closely resembles The Collector from STS1, using two minions to create pressure instead of one. 🕯️
The fight is now more focused on minion pressure, with the Queen providing recurring control effects.
Instead of applying 99 turns of Frail, Weak, and Vulnerable once, the Queen now reapplies 3-turn debuffs every 4 turns. Chains of Binding also deteriorates over time, binding 3 / 2 / 1 / 0 cards on successive casts instead of staying at a static 3 cards forever.
🦀 Kaiser Crab
Complexity 2 ⭐⭐
Kaiser Crab now makes claw management a more meaningful. 🦀⚙️
Killing one claw empowers the other with extra durability through plating, so the fight demands a bit more thought about damage distribution and timing of killing a claw.
When the Rocket claw is sleeping, it makes itself vulnerable, giving a clearer punish window after surviving the big attack
This mod also tones down several elite encounters so that the run’s main difficulty spike comes more from bosses than from elite attrition. 🧭
🌿 Phantasmal Gardener
Only becomes skittish at 13 HP (around half HP). Slightly reduced HP to make them more burstable and ending the fight earlier🌱⚔️
⚡ Terror Eel
Reduced HP to be more in line with other elites. ⚡
🐛 Skulking Colony
Reduced HP to make the encounter less likely to drag one turn too long. 🧨
🗿 Bygone Effigy
Now creates recurring sleep windows, allowing turns with high burst damage. Long fights wiill still be threatening, because wake-ups will lead to insane strength scaling. 💤🔥
Expect bosses to be harder, more distinct, and more demanding.
In exchange, elites will be a little less oppressive.
Boss fights will no longer just be solved by “having enough HP”, but:

🎯 Design Philosophy
Elites should test whether your deck is functional.
Bosses should test whether your deck is actually good. 👑
Expect bosses to be harder, more distinct, and more demanding.
In exchange, elites will be a little less oppressive.
Boss fights will no longer just be solved by “having enough HP”, but:
- ⚔️ Understand what the boss is trying to do
- 🛡️ Build a deck that can withstand the pressure
- ⏳ End the fight before the mechanic overwhelms you
Good luck climbing. 💀🔥
