Sly Keyword Explained: How Discard Synergies Took Over Silent

Sly is a new STS2 keyword that auto-plays cards for free when discarded. This guide covers the rules, what synergizes with it, and why Acrobatics moved up to Uncommon because of it.

What Sly does

Sly is a new keyword introduced in Slay the Spire 2. When a card with Sly is discarded from your hand, it is automatically played for free instead of going to the discard pile. The play uses no energy and triggers all the card's effects normally.

This makes discard-heavy Silent decks dramatically faster. A single Calculated Gamble or Tactician-style discard turns into multiple free actions if your hand is full of Sly cards.

  • Sly cards auto-play for free when discarded.
  • Costs no energy, triggers full card effect.
  • Stacks with any forced-discard card or relic.

Why Acrobatics moved to Uncommon

Sly made early Acrobatics too smooth. Acrobatics draws cards and discards one — exactly the trigger Sly engines wanted. When it was Common, almost every Silent run got 2-3 free copies and the discard engine assembled itself in Act 1.

Moving it to Uncommon does not kill the archetype. It just makes Sly decks an active draft choice instead of a default smoothing layer that every Silent run got for free.

  • Acrobatics now Uncommon, not Common.
  • Sly archetype still works — just costs an actual draft slot.
  • Other Sly enablers (Tactician, Calculated Gamble) became more important.

Build checklist

A real Sly deck wants three things: 2-3 cards with Sly itself, 1-2 reliable discard triggers, and at least one way to refill your hand to keep the engine running. Tingsha and Tough Bandages relics turn this from a combo into a passive damage-and-block faucet.

  • 2-3 Sly cards.
  • 1-2 discard triggers (Tactician, Calculated Gamble, Acrobatics).
  • 1 hand-refill source.
  • Tingsha + Tough Bandages relics multiply the engine.
