Slay the Spire 2 Beginner Guide for Your First Real Win
A practical first-run roadmap covering your opening character, map routing, reward discipline, and the mistakes that kill most early runs.
Start with survival and map discipline
Most early-access losses still come from bad pathing, over-drafting, and taking elite fights before your deck can answer them. The cleanest opening is to begin with Ironclad, lean on the free sustain from Burning Blood, and treat HP as a resource you spend to gain stronger rewards.
On the map, plan two or three nodes ahead instead of locking yourself into a greedy elite line. A route that offers one elite, one campfire, and a shop is usually stronger than a route that forces two elites with no bailout.
- Pick Ironclad first if you want the smoothest learning curve.
- Fight one early elite when your deck already has front-loaded damage and a potion.
- Use campfires to upgrade key cards unless your HP is already in danger.
Draft for immediate problems, not dream combos
Recent beginner guides all agree on the same rule: a lean deck beats a bloated pile. Skip rewards when the offered cards do not fix your current weakness. Act 1 usually asks for front-loaded damage first, then reliable block, then card draw and scaling.
If you already beat hallway fights but keep dying to elites, take stronger single-target damage. If fights go long and you crumble, add scaling or draw. Always tie card rewards to the enemies you expect to face over the next few floors.
- Skipping a bad card reward is often the best reward.
- Buy removals when your deck already has enough power to punish dead draws.
- Potions are there to win hard fights now, not to decorate your belt.
Your first win condition is consistency
For a first clear, you do not need the flashiest synergy in the game. You need a deck that reaches its important cards on time, survives elite turns, and has a simple scaling plan for bosses.
That usually means fewer cards, better upgrades, and cleaner turns. Once you reliably clear runs, then you can start stretching into greedier archetypes, infinites, and patch-sensitive power spikes.
